116,993,629 Stand Up and Take Action!

San Diego county Stand Up

Globally a world record number of people stood up to declare their committment to end poverty and to support the Millennium Development Goals as a means to doing that. In Escondido we had 129 people attend the San Diego County event.
This high level of public engagement on the issue of extreme poverty reflects the same results as a recent survey by WorldPublicOpinion.org which found that 75% of Americans expressed a willingness to pay the estimated required amount (approximately $56 per year) to meet the goals of cutting world hunger and global poverty in half. There is a way (demonstrated by the Millennium Development Goals) and there is a will (demonstrated by the 116,993,629 people around the world who participated in StandUp) The time is now!

   Great!

   Let’s also commit to taking on poverty right here in San Diego too! Let’s look at why only 3 of 10 people poor enough to get food stamps in San Diego actually get it. Let’s look at why we have law enforcement officials doing warrantless, unannounced home searches on all applicants of aid. Why are we letting our neighbors in San Diego languish in poverty even while they work hard in their underpaying jobs, go to school, and raise their kids?

   Hi Hilda,

   Great point, possibly you’d be interested in organizing a letter writing campaign for Bread for the World next year. From what I hear the focus will be on domestic issues in 2009. Give Crossroads Christian Reformed Church in San Marcos a call and we’ll get you more info.
